September, 2002
TULSA, OK - September 18, 2002 - At their September meeting today, the Association of Contingency Planners heard Dave Block, Sales and Marketing Manager for the DATA3 Enguard data center, present "9-11: A Look Back at How Cooperation Got US Through, and Where Cooperation Could Take Us in the Future". His presentation quantified the extent of damage from the 9-11 NYC disaster in terms of the loss of human life, of office space, to infrastructure, of jobs and taxes, and the total cost of the 9-11 tragedy, including lost taxes and revenues, the toll of the damage, and insurance claims.
The presentation included the stories of survival and cooperation of four companies: Comdisco, GE Capital Solutions, IBM, and Commerzbank. It examined the role business continuity planning (BCP) played in 9-11, and how through unprecedented cooperation between vendors and businesses the US got back on its feet again. Block highlighted some of the disaster recovery lessons that were learned from 9-11, and how some communities have stepped up their efforts to help small businesses survive disasters.
Block also introduced the Association to the plan that the South Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce has put in place, and showed how a similar plan, along with cooperation among area Tulsa businesses, could provide similar protection for Green Country companies. The plan that was warmly met by the Association of Continuity Planners present at the meeting, and a Q&A session followed.
